On Tuesday morning, the local services of the Rethymno prefecture were alerted to a rock slide on the road leading through the popular Kourtaliotiko gorge in southern Crete. Fortunately, the falling rocks and stones did not hit any vehicles and therefore no one was injured. However, the road was closed because it required a thorough cleaning.

An inspection is to be carried out in the coming days to clarify the causes of today's incident. At the same time, the prefectural authorities emphasize the need to finance a special study and carry out security works that will prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Kourtaliotiko Gorge is one of the greatest natural attractions of the Rethymno prefecture. It is the so-called "windy" gorge, because its construction significantly increases the force of the wind gusts moving through this rock funnel. On windy days, the wind gusts in the gorge can be so strong that it is difficult to stand on your feet. The height of the rock walls, which exceeds 600 meters, adds to the picturesqueness of this gorge, making Kourtaliotiko an extremely majestic place. During the tourist season, a large number of tourists come here, and the road, which today has been covered in stones, is driven by a lot of cars every day.
Let us recall that a year ago in Kourtaliotiko, falling stones from a great height fell on a car that was passing by . Although the vehicle was seriously damaged, the driver was lucky because he did not suffer any injuries. And less than a year ago in the neighboring Kotsifou gorge, there was such a large landslide that the road leading through this gorge was destroyed. Driving through Kotsifou is still impossible because work is still underway to secure the rock walls.
