The best Polish website dedicated to the Greek island Crete and to a small extent of continental Greece. You will find useful information related to visiting Crete that goes beyond the offer of optional tours. On the website you will also find descriptions of the most interesting places that we visited by visiting this largest Greek island. The content complements the current news, photographs and recipes of Greek cuisine.
Balos (Μπάλος) is one of the flagship beaches of Crete, if not all of Greece. Even the least successful photo showing the landscape of this place must do and in most cases makes a really big impression. The lack of a comfortable asphalt road means that outside of the hours when cruise ships arrive here, this beach is visited by not very many tourists.
The famous lagoon covers the area between two peninsulas: Cape Tigani and Gramvousa. The name of the first comes from the Greek words for the pan. When you look at the map, the comparison will surely make you quite right, because the shape of the peninsula resembles that of a kitchen vessel. Balos lagoon is located in the region of the handle of this "pan", usually created by several quite broad sand languages connecting Cap Tigani and Gramvousa with each other. Each year the Balos beach may have a slightly different appearance, which is shaped during the winter storms.
As in the case of Elafonissi, it is a perfect beach for families with children. Extensive shallows, which extend here over tens of meters, allow for free bathing even of the youngest children. For long baths also encourages warm water located in this area of the beach. On the Balos lagoon you can spend a typical lazy day, but it is also a perfect place for active recreation. People who like to snorkel by going to this beach should remember to bring the right equipment.
How to get
You can reach the Balos lagoon in two ways: by car or by boat. If you are interested in a longer stay on Balos, then you should choose a car yourself. Unfortunately, this is tantamount to overcoming a long section of the gravel road connecting the village of Kalyviani with the parking lot located on the top of the hill above the beach. The distance between these two places is about 10 kilometers. Most of the gravel road is in good condition, so you can easily get here by an ordinary passenger car. Of course, this does not mean that the road is not demanding. You still have to remember to keep proper attention and not too fast. It is also worth noting that the majority of car rental agreements do not cover insurance of damage incurred as a result of driving on such roads.
If you choose independent access, you will be able to enjoy the tranquility and relatively small amount of tourists relaxing on this beach for a while. Unfortunately, this will change with the first ship that will arrive in the Balos lagoon. At the peak of the holiday season, several hundred tourists are transported on three units sailing to this beach. The cruise ship fleet includes two smaller vessels that stop in a small bay near the Cap Tigani peninsula and a larger ferry equipped with a leading ramp descending directly by the shore.
How to swim
Ships sailing to Balos start a cruise in a small port located next to Kissamos. Next to the port is a small building where the owner of Gramvousa Balos Cruises provides full information about the cruise and sells tickets. Currently, they are offered at two prices of 22 € for the so-called "open ticket" and 25 € for a regular ticket purchased on the day of departure. You can use the first ticket only if you buy it with a minimum of 2 days in advance. Of course, it is also possible to buy tickets online, in which case they cost 22 €. The ticket price does not include the cost of boarding available in the ship's cantina.
The cruise takes about 55 minutes and starts in the port of Kissamos around 10 am and ends at 6 pm. At the peak of the season an additional cruise is also started, which starts at 12.30 and ends at 19.30.
In the picture above, Imeri Gramvousa is visible
During the cruise to the Balos lagoon you will flow past twothe twin islands called Imeri Gramvousa (Ήμερη Γραμβούσα) and Agria Gramvousa (Άγρια Γραμβούσα). The prefixes their name perfectly characterize these two rocky pieces of land emerging from the Mediterranean. Imeri means tamed in Greek, and Agria is nothing but wild.
Depending on which ship (bigger or smaller) you are embarked on, on your way to Balos or on your way back, you will be able to visit the Venetian fortress located on the "tame" island. Although the time to explore this island is quite limited, however, we recommend climbing to the very top, because the panorama stretching from the walls of this fortress is breathtaking, and the Balos lagoon below makes an amazing impression.
Why it is worth it
Regardless of how you get to Balos, we can assure you that the landscapes you see during this trip will remain with you for a very long time. It's worth seeing this place with your own eyes, because the pictures taken here have become a kind of icon illustrating the beauty of Greece.

Dwa lata temu wypożyczyliśmy Suzuki Jimmy i pojechaliśmy z hotelu z Malii (blisko Hersonissos) z 8-letnim dzieckiem. 1.

Byłem w 2014 roku i bez problemów dojechałem osobowym Mercedesem z wypożyczalni.

Souda is at the end of the ravine, whose bottom is the Finikas River. This small stream fed by the mountain streams is full of water throughout the year. The good availability of water makes the valley green even at the peak of the holiday season. In several places along Finikas, you can see groves of the Cephonist palm Teofrast (Phoenix theophrastii), which you can know from places such as Vai and Preveli. Souda is one of the most important reserves, where this very rare species is found.
Skinaria is a small beach located along a small bay, whose outlet on both sides ends with a rocky coast. It is still a little-known place overlooked by mass tourism. Peace and quiet and an interesting bottom abounding in the marine flora and fauna are the biggest advantages of this beach. Under favorable conditions, crystal clear water allows visibility up to 40m deep into the sea. It should not be surprising that Skinaria is so eagerly visited by diving centers.
