Feta cheese, known to all fans of Greece, is still eagerly counterfeited by cheesemakers around the world. An example of this practice is the decision of a court in Chile issued on March 20, which blocked an attempt to use the name "feta" for a product completely unrelated to Greek cheese. This is of course not the first time that the Greek national cheese has sparked a trade dispute at an international level.
“ Feta is a product of international renown and high value, which is why some people are trying to ‘steal’ the name ,” said Christos Apostolopoulos, president of the Association of Greek Dairy Companies. The Chilean court’s decision is a message to other producers that the name is reserved exclusively for Greek products.
The Chilean court's ruling thus ends a four-year tussle over the American product " Athenos Feta ". In 2021, the Association of Greek Dairy Companies reserved the name feta in the Chilean Intellectual Property Organization (INAPI). The registration of this name was opposed by the American Consortium for Common Food Names Holdings Inc. (CCFN ), which filed an appeal to INAPI. However, this institution rejected the American objection, which resulted in CCFN appealing to the Industrial Property Court of the Second Instance in Chile in 2024. However, this court agreed with the Association of Greek Dairy Companies, citing European Union regulations.
Since 2002, the name feta has been included in the register of protected designations of origin (PDO), which means that this type of cheese can only be produced in Greece from sheep's milk or sheep's milk with a maximum of 30% goat's milk. This milk can only be obtained from local breeds of sheep and goats that feed on specific vegetation, and the cheese must be made in accordance with traditional recipes and production methods.
