This morning at around 8 am a group of climbers from the Chania Mountaineering Association found the body of a 21-year-old tourist from Germany who went missing a month ago. Taking advantage of the good weather conditions, the climbers carried out another search for the missing Johan. The body of the young man was found at an altitude of 1300 meters, in the area of a mitata, or stone shepherd's hut. This place had been indicated since the beginning of the search. It was suspected that Johan, after descending from Gigilos, could have headed to this hut for the night. Unfortunately, the very difficult weather conditions that have prevailed so far in the higher parts of the White Mountains prevented earlier arrival at this place.

Experienced climbers from the Chania Mountaineering Association set off on another search expedition on Thursday morning and spent the night in the mountains in this stone hut. “ We organized a team of six people, I personally spoke to his sisters and used the information they gave me. I put together his route, conversations, estimated roughly where he could be and with great hope we set out to find him, if he had indeed followed this route, ” said the head of the climbing group.

The previous evening, after arriving at the site, while surveying the terrain through binoculars, the climbers’ attention was drawn to a red object in the distance. This morning, they began their search and headed towards the red object. In this way, they reached the Poralia area, about 1,600 meters southeast of the summit of Gigiliosa, just below the pass. The red object turned out to be the backpack of the missing hiker. The man’s body was found nearby, among the rocks, a few meters from the marked route leading from Gigiliosa. The climbers immediately notified the authorities and the man’s family.

The Mitáto tou Tzátzimou area, where the tourist was found, is one of the most dangerous and inaccessible areas of the White Mountains, which poses great problems even for experienced climbers. Paradoxically, the point where the man's body was found is relatively easier compared to other more difficult parts of the route he had previously climbed.

He was already at the end of his journey and was most likely walking at night, which is why he could not reach a safe place ,” said Stratos Badoyannis, president of the Chania Mountaineering Association.

Thodoris Viglis, the commander of the team that found the body of the missing man, said: " I am not a forensic doctor, but I estimate that he lost his strength, he suffered from hypothermia. The weather conditions were unfavourable, and he lay there, waiting for death. If he had lasted even fifteen minutes longer, he would have found shelter in the mitata, once inside, he would have survived. The message is that we should not overestimate our strength, unfortunately what he did was tantamount to suicide ."

It is expected that on Saturday, a fire brigade team from the Anopolis unit, with the support of the high-altitude club, will set out to retrieve the tourist's body. Reaching the area where it is located will require 5-6 hours of walking over very difficult terrain. A police helicopter will probably be involved in the operation to transport the tourist's body. The family of the deceased Johan received the news of Johan's discovery with relief. " We are happy that at least in this way we managed to recover him ."

We have written about the disappearance of the young tourist twice. If any of you have not been following this story, we remind you that on Thursday, February 13, 2025, Johan left his rented car in Xyloskalo, near the entrance to the Samaria Gorge and probably entered the closed gorge, and then headed to the top of Mount Gigilos. He also sent his sister information about his location when he was on his way up and a text message, most likely from the top. After that, contact was lost.
Two days later, the tourist was reported missing by the owner of the car rental company from which Johan had rented the car.

Robię ją z bakłażanem, mieloną wołowiną, ziemniakami i kremowym beszamelem. (...)
