According to the latest data provided by the Bank of Greece, despite the increase in tourist arrivals to Greece, the average amount spent per average tourist has been decreasing for two seasons. In just the last two years, this decrease has amounted to a total of more than 15%.
Crowds of tourists do not always translate into an overall increase in revenue
In August of this year, the average expenditure per tourist was 594 euros. A year earlier, the average holiday budget was 652 euros. Two years ago, during the same period, the average holidaymaker spent 693 euros on holiday.
Average spending from January to August is even lower, at €584 this year. A year earlier, the figure was significantly higher, at €628.
Greece is becoming a very popular destination year by year, which is reflected in the number of visitors. In August of this year, tourist traffic increased by 6.6% compared to the same period in the previous year. In the period January-August this year, tourist traffic increased by as much as 9.9% compared to the same period in 2023.
So more and more tourists are coming, but they are spending less and less. Interestingly, holiday spending has been significantly cut by tourists from Germany, who are considered the most generous customers. In August this year, the average spending of a German tourist was 120 euros lower compared to last year. If we take the period from January to August under the microscope, this amount will be 92 euros lower compared to last year. Tourists from other countries have also made significant cuts in spending. The French turned out to be even more thrifty than the Germans, spending almost 21% less in August this year than in August last year, reducing their spending from 922 euros to 731 euros.
The low willingness of tourists to spend is particularly harmful to typical tourist shops and service points (in the photo one of the shops in Agios Nikolaos)
According to analysts, the most significant are the financial constraints of tourists from Germany, because significantly more guests come to Greece from this country than from France. Therefore, the lower propensity of German tourists to spend on vacation is more noticeable for the Greek economy. If we look at the same period of time, a nearly 10% drop in spending was also noted among tourists from England, which is also a very important tourist market. On the other hand, Italians turned out to be more generous, as they were one of the few nationalities to spend more this year than last. This increase is at the level of almost 12%.
We encourage you to take a look at the table below, where we have presented a summary of the expenses for an average tourist by nationality:

Dlaczego mnie to nie dziwi.. w turystyce już dawno zapomniano czym jest i z czym się wiąże krzywa popytu..

Christian Arnidis - Moja Grecja Według danych zebranych przez Bank of Greece najbardziej przycięli wydatki turyści wydający dotąd najwięcej pieniędzy. Wszyscy liczą i oszczędzają, tym bardziej że ceny w ostatnich latach poszybowały ostro w górę. A branża turystyczna liczyła chyba na to że jakiej ceny nie wystawią to turysta zapłaci. No jednak nie.
