Today, the Cretan media reported the reopening of the Samaria National Park. The gorge will be open from tomorrow, Saturday, September 28. The decision to open Samaria was made after meetings to analyze the results of the inspection of the gorge by experts from the Greek Geological and Mineral Research Authority and the Department of Geology of the University of Athens. We remind you that Samaria was closed on September 18 after the fatal accident of a tourist and the need to evacuate the rest of the people on the trail at the time. The cause of this tragic event was rock slides that occurred as a result of unexpected heavy rainfall.
Based on data collected during inspections both from the ground and in the air, experts have determined that the current risk of landslides is the same as before the fatal accident on September 18.
Samaria has been closed since the day of the accident. An unexpected storm destroyed some of the footbridges and passages, so it was necessary to clear the trail and carry out maintenance work. Information boards about the functioning of the gorge have been placed at the entrances. Additional information signs have also been placed in places with an increased risk of landslides, which were indicated during the last inspection of Samaria. Trained personnel will also be present in places with an increased risk, who will inform people passing by about such a risk. It will be necessary to pass through such points quickly, without unnecessary delay, in order to spend as little time as possible in the area of increased risk.
According to the announcements, cooperation has been implemented between the Organization for Environment and Climate Change and the Greek Meteorological Service in the matter of developing specialized weather forecasts for the Samaria Gorge. Let us recall that on September 18, the generally developed forecasts did not predict the occurrence of violent weather phenomena in the gorge.
Due to increased security measures, the first week of opening has set a maximum limit of 1,000 people who will be able to enter the gorge in one day. Therefore, to avoid surprises at the entrance, it is best to purchase an electronic ticket via the website https://samaria-tickets.necca.gov.gr/el/checkout The requirement to have electronic tickets applies strictly to organized groups.
At the same time, the new Regulations on the Operation of the State Forests state that visitors are individually responsible for their safety in all State Forests (including ravines), accepting the risk that may occur during unforeseen and extraordinary events. Visitors are also required to take all safety measures they consider necessary: appropriate footwear, protective helmets, maintaining safe distances. Additionally, people in the State Forests are required to strictly comply with any extraordinary arrangements or prohibitions on staying in the area and to obey the instructions of employees and appropriate services.
