A few weeks ago, we wrote about the planned closure of the Dikte cave due to the need to carry out renovation work. According to the original assumptions, the cave was to be closed tomorrow, September 9, 2024. However, at the end of August, it was decided to postpone the date of closing the cave to tourists. Dikte will be open to visitors until September 30 this year.
The change in the date of the cave closure was requested by entrepreneurs operating in the tourism industry and the municipality of Oropedio Lassithi, because September is still very profitable. By postponing the date of the cave closure, entrepreneurs operating in this area will be able to continue working until the end of September, when the proper tourist season in this area ends.
The closure of Dikte Cave is necessary to carry out work related to the project to improve safety, accessibility and modernize infrastructure. The large scope of work to be carried out means that the cave is also to be closed to visitors for the whole of next year.
The budget for this project is 15,968,714 euros, and after its completion, the cave will be open to the elderly and disabled. Up until now, the Dikte cave has been visited by an average of 200,000 people per year. These are counter data from ticket sales, so they do not include small children and those who enter the cave free of charge.
Before the main phase of work can begin, it will be necessary to transport over 90 tons of materials, scaffolding and foundation anchors. These materials must be placed on pallets, the weight of which cannot exceed 700 kg, because they will be transported by helicopter. 15 days of the entire work schedule have been allocated for transporting the materials to the vicinity of the cave.
So if you are currently in Crete and you are planning to visit the mythical cave where, according to myths, Zeus was born, this is a good opportunity. Especially since the next guests will be able to enter here only in 2026.
