During the high season, the Greek media talks about excessive tourism that some regions of Greece are struggling with. In the case of Crete, this problem mainly concerns the Elafonissi beach and the Balos lagoon, which are under huge siege every summer. Last week, the media also reported information about the island of Santorini, which received as many as 11,000 people in one day. tourists, which is slightly less than the number of its inhabitants. Therefore, even people living permanently on the island were asked to limit their movements on that day. Santorini is also a place that has had a problem with overtourism for years, which begins to reach absurd proportions during the season.
Recently, the Athens research Institute Eteron collected the opinions of Greeks on the impact of tourism and the phenomenon of hypertourism. This study shows that 30.5% of Greek residents believe that Greece suffers negative consequences due to excessive tourism and immediate actions are needed to limit it. 45.6% of respondents believe that the country is not yet struggling with the problem of hypertourism, but it should be paid attention to in the future, while 19.6% are not worried about this problem at all and believe that the more tourists visit country, the better.
In the case of respondents living in tourist areas, as many as 2/3 positively assessed the impact of tourism on their area. At the national level, the percentage of people who perceive the positive impact of tourism is even higher and amounts to 74.4%. The respondents see a positive impact primarily in the economy, employment and the organization of cultural events.
Respondents indicated the negative impact of tourism primarily in increased environmental pollution, punctuality and rent levels.
We are curious about your opinions on this subject. When spending your holidays in Greece, do you notice the problem of excessive tourism, or is it still not an alarming situation in your opinion? Should the Greek authorities start limiting the number of people in the most congested places?
