An unusual event occurred in the town of Kalamafka (Καλαμαύκας) located in the eastern part of Crete. In this once quiet, typically agricultural settlement, the outrage of some inhabitants, whose crops are destroyed by goats and sheep, has been growing for a long time. About 2 thousand animals moving in this area without any supervision ravages the local vineyards and gardens. Most of them belong to one farmer who for a long time ignores all complaints of local residents.
It seems, however, that finally the inhabitants of Kalamafka will be able to breathe a sigh of relief. At one of the last meetings of the city council, a decision was made to administratively expel this farmer from the town. This operation was to be carried out today.
Excessive amount of animals, which destroy not only agricultural crops, but also pose a significant burden on the environment, is not only a problem of the town of Kalamafka. Similar cases are also recorded in other parts of Crete. It is worth mentioning the Messara region, where conflicts between animal breeders and farmers specializing in crops are also frequent.
The solution adopted in Kalamafka has also emboldened residents of other towns to take similar steps. In the coming days, a general meeting is planned in Thripti, where local authorities have similar problems to resolve.
