Yesterday, the Bank of Greece published a report summarizing the tourist season in Greece in 2024. It turns out that 2024 was a "golden" year that dethroned all previous record years. The report also shows that Greece is becoming a country that attracts more and more tourists from all over the world year after year.

In 2024, 35.9 million foreign tourists arrived, which is a 9.8% increase compared to the previous year, when 32.7 million travelers arrived. Tourism receipts reached 21.7 billion euros, or 5.4% more than in the previous season.

By plane and on wheels

Tourist traffic increased both at Greek airports, which recorded a 10.7% increase, and at road border crossings (+8.9%). There were 11% more tourists from the EU compared to the previous year (21.795 million), while tourists from outside the EU came to Greece by 8.1% (14.156 million).

With a simultaneous increase in incoming traffic, average expenditure on travel decreased by 5.1%. However, net revenues related to the provision of tourist services balanced the deficit that arose in the balance of goods turnover by 53%.

Top travel markets

Last year brought significant increases in tourist traffic from Germany by +13.4%, which means that a total of 5.402 million German travelers came to Greece. In the case of France, we are dealing with an 8.8% increase. A total of 1.992 million travelers came to Greece from this country. Ten percent increases in the number of travelers also apply to Italy (2.026 million) and the United States (1.547 million travelers). A slight decrease in the number of travelers was recorded on the British market (-1%), but the total number of tourists from this country amounted to as much as 4.545 million people. As for tourist traffic from Russia, for obvious reasons it was lower by almost 55% and amounted to 16.1 thousand travelers.

Tourists from Germany and Great Britain spend the most money in Greece. Revenues from tourists from Germany increased by 3.5% last year (3.696 billion €). As for tourists from Great Britain, revenues were 3.7% lower than a year ago, but the total amount of spending on holidays by the British at the level of 3.172 billion euros still puts them in 2nd place on the podium of the most generous tourists.
It is also worth noting the 13.6% increase in revenues from tourists from Italy (EUR 1.225 billion) and the USA (15.1%, EUR 1.581 billion).

Dynamic December

In its summary of the past year, the Bank of Greece pays special attention to the data showing how tourist traffic looked in December. They show how dynamically Greek tourism develops in the winter months. In the last month of 2024, travel revenues increased to 435.1 million euros, which means an increase of as much as 33.3%. Winter tourist traffic increased by 15.3% compared to the same month in 2023 and amounted to 882,400 people.
