The springs at the bottom of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge have become a very popular tourist destination in recent years. Many people, while viewing the majestic rocks of the gorge from the road, also decided to go down to see the famous waterfalls. Picturesque photos of people bathing under the cascades of water posted on social media additionally fueled the spiral of interest in this place.

Unfortunately, the popularity of Kourtaliotiko has grown to such an extent that residents of nearby towns have begun to protest against the excessive number of tourists and the use of this place as a bathing area. This should come as no surprise, as the Kourtaliotiko springs are for them a source of fresh water, which is delivered to their homes. In addition, the Kourtaliotiko area is primarily a special protection area entered in the Natura 2000 register. As announced by the municipality of Agios Vasilios and the prefecture of Rethymno, the rules for visiting this place will be changed in the upcoming season.
In order to control the situation of excessive tourist numbers, which began to threaten the natural environment and cause other increasingly serious problems, a load-bearing capacity study was first conducted. This allowed to determine the safe "strength" of the place. The study shows that the place can be visited by a maximum of 100 people per hour. Assuming that the descent to the gorge will be open for 10 hours, the daily limit is 1,000 people.
In order to start controlling the flow of tourists, electronic tickets for entry to the gorge are to be introduced. According to the announcement, 70% of the revenue from tickets is to go to the municipality of Agios Vasilios, and 30% to the Organization for the Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA).
The money from the tickets is to be invested by the commune in activities such as installing security measures in the gorge, opening a first aid point, cleaning the area and introducing traffic regulations, which will mean redirecting cars to the parking lot. The money that will go to OFYPEKA is to be used to create trails and undertake other such activities.
Both the commune and OFYPEKA announce that even if the decisions are not adopted on time, the necessary actions included in the programme agreement will be taken anyway.
