On October 31, in accordance with the operating regulations, the Samaria Gorge ended the tourist season. However, this does not mean that it was still possible to cross the gorge today. The trail was closed since yesterday due to the forecast of light rainfall. Therefore, it can be considered that today's end of the season this year was only symbolic.
Unfortunately, the last weeks of the Samaria Gorge's operation were marked by frequent closures of the trail. After the accident that occurred in the second week of September, decisions were made to close the trail exceptionally often due to the forecast of unstable weather and rain.
The excessively frequent closure of the trail has sparked protests from business owners whose operations are closely linked to the gorge. According to entrepreneurs, decisions were made too hastily and too cautiously based on not very accurate forecasts. Often, on the day when Samaria was closed to tourists, instead of the predicted rain, beautiful sunshine shone. The protests of entrepreneurs against such management of the gorge were supported by the authorities of the Chania region. Last Tuesday, the deputy governor of Chania sent a letter of protest on this matter to the Minister of Environment and Energy.
According to many people, the decisions to frequently close the trail were also painful because both September and October are some of the best months to visit the gorge. The temperatures are lower than in summer and more favorable for walking such a long route. It is also the last moment when local companies can still earn money by offering their services to tourists.
It remains to be hoped that by the time the gorge opens next year, better rules for managing the gorge will have been developed, and decisions to close the trail will be based on more accurate weather forecasts. Closing the trail for trivial reasons has resulted in financial losses not only for local companies, but also for agencies organizing trips through the gorge. According to the protesters, frequent decisions to close the trail have damaged the good reputation of the gorge, which until now was considered relatively safe.
During this year, Samaria was visited by 117,542 people. The trip through the gorge is one of the most important tourist attractions in Crete.

Kiedyś o lodach wąwozu decydował region Krety, a obecnie Ateny.
