When one of the fragments killed a tourist who was in the Park at the time, questions began to be asked about the safety of people passing through the gorge every day. After Samaria was reopened, daily limits for visitors were introduced. In addition, when the weather forecasts raise doubts, decisions are made to close Samaria to tourists. However, this action is increasingly being criticized by entrepreneurs operating in Omalos and Agia Roumeli, who then lose the opportunity to make money. In their opinion, decisions to close the trail are not very good and often premature.

Last week, the gorge remained closed for three days. The basis for making this decision was weather forecasts, according to which violent meteorological phenomena were to occur in the gorge. The problem is that on the days when Samaria remained closed, the weather was very good, and the forecasted phenomena did not occur. Businessmen believe that decisions to close the gorge too often are inappropriate, because they are made by officials in Athens. An additional argument is that the decisions to close only concern the Samaria gorge. On the same days when the Samaria trail was closed to tourists, the Agia Irini and Imbros gorges located in the same region of Crete were open to tourists. Businessmen believe that the Samaria gorge is being discredited in this way, and because of these actions, the number of visits has dropped significantly.
At the same time, local business owners emphasize that closing Samaria during bad weather is of course logical, because people's safety is the most important thing. However, as they emphasize, recent decisions were made incorrectly because the weather was perfect on those days. They assume that the forecasts that were the basis for the decision to close are inaccurate.
Entrepreneurs also refer to the fact that a few years ago, when the management of the Samaria National Park was local, all such decisions were made by the Forest Service. Its employees were on site, knew the specifics of the gorge and, if necessary, made decisions to close the trail. Currently, management of the gorge has passed into the hands of the Organization for Natural Environment and Climate Change, so all decisions are made by officials working far from Samaria.
The Samaria Gorge is a place that is associated with many local businesses located on the Omalos plateau and located in Agia Roumeli at the mouth of the gorge. It is worth bearing in mind that these are not only taverns, which in the afternoon fill up with tourists who have passed through the gorge. There is also a large accommodation base, which in the event of the gorge being closed, suffers losses because tourists cancel their reservations. The work and earnings of the shipowner, who owns the ferries picking up tourists from Agia Roumeli, also depend on the activity of Samaria. The group of victims also includes the owners of small boats, taxis operating in the area of Sougia and Chora Sfakion, or bus drivers taking tourists to Omalos and picking them up later from Sougia, Chora Sfakion or Paleochora . For all these people and companies, the Samaria Gorge is a basic source of work and therefore also a source of income.

Byliśmy 2 tygodnie temu i mieliśmy taką sytuację, że pogoda była bardzo dobra, bilety były sprzedawane online więc można było kupić bilet a przed wejściem do Samaria zatrzymano nas i usłyszeliśmy że dzisiaj jest zamknięte. Totalne nieporozumienie. Osoby wpuszczające były zaskoczone że my kupiliśmy w tym samym dniu bilet a oni mieli informację że nie wolno wpuszczać turystów. Ponieważ przypłynęliśmy promem musieliśmy spędzić tam prawie cały dzień, nie mogąc skorzystać z wejścia do Samaria bo w niedzielę chodzą tam tylko 2 promy . Trzeba popracować nad informacja znajdująca się na stronie internetowej, bo wprowadzanie ludzi w błąd nie jest fajne

Artur Nowak Już wpadli na pomysł noszenia kasków. Jeśli to przejdzie to mają kupić ich 3 tysiące i wydawać przy wejściu :)
Jak czekaliście prawie cały dzień na prom w Aghia Roumeli będąc przygotowani do chodzenia to trzeba było iść E4 do Chora Sfakion albo przynajmniej do Loutro - ładny szlak, jak na nadmorską wersję E4 względnie nietrudny.
