According to representatives of the tourism industry in Crete, this year's October in terms of the number of visitors to the island is the best in recent years. Unfortunately, we still have to wait a bit for specific statistical data. Hotel occupancy remains high and in some facilities fluctuates between 90 and 95%.
However, the season is coming to an end. According to estimates, 90% of hotels will be closed by the end of this month, and after November 17, all seasonal hotels in tourist areas will cease to operate. Only hotels located in the main cities of Crete and operating all year round will remain open until the beginning of the next tourist season.
Many people decide to fly in for vacation in October, because prices are significantly lower than in previous months. Unfortunately, as tourist agents emphasize, the cost of vacation is increased by the environmental fee, which currently amounts to €7/night for 4* hotels, and as much as €10 per night for 5* facilities. Next season, these fees will be even higher.
However, despite the large number of guests on the island, not everyone has reason to be happy. Local businessmen and small entrepreneurs associated with the tourist business do not hide their disappointment because, like last year, guests do not spend too much money on purchases in local shops, on services, or in taverns and restaurants. Unfortunately, the effects of the economic crisis are still felt, which forces many tourists to save money.

Cypr i płd.
