On Wednesday afternoon, a fire broke out on the outskirts of the popular tourist town of Platanias. The fire started in the southern part of the town near the old national road in an area covered with reeds. Due to the strong wind and dried vegetation, the fire began to move quickly westwards and could have spread to the densely built-up northern part of Platanias at any moment. The fire threatened the surrounding residential buildings and hotels, and thick smoke was visible even from the eastern parts of Chania. Thanks to the immediate intervention of the fire brigade, the fire was brought under control before the worst happened.
Fortunately, the fire was limited to material losses only.

SMS messages were sent to people currently in Platanias asking those near the square and in the western part to go to the old national road and start moving towards the town of Gerani. People in the nearby supermarket and guests staying in the two closest hotels were also evacuated.
Fearing the rapid movement of the fire front, all fire brigade forces in Chania were mobilized. Ultimately, 150 firefighters, 25 vehicles and three helicopters took part in the operation. Local authorities today point out that the immediate response of all services was decisive in quickly bringing the fire under control. An equally important role was played by firefighting helicopters, which were involved from the beginning of the operation. Thanks to their work, it was possible to prevent the fire from reaching the center of the town.
The damage caused by the fire is fortunately relatively minor. In addition to the undergrowth where the fire started, two cars, several boats stored outside and nearby warehouses were burned. Part of the power grid was also destroyed, leaving much of Platanias without electricity. Even today, the fire brigade remained at the scene of the fire, monitoring the ruins.
Above and below you can see how the fire extinguishing operation is in progress.
