For three days, a dangerous fire raged in the southern part of the Amari commune in the Rethymno prefecture. The situation was so serious that residents were evacuated from a total of nine villages, and Cretan firefighters were supported by their colleagues from Athens. The fire broke out on Wednesday around noon and quickly grew to large proportions, reaching the border with the Heraklion prefecture.

Despite the heroic efforts of the firefighters, the strong, constantly changing wind kept moving the fire and rekindling the extinguished fire clusters. In addition, the wind increased its strength during the day, and it must also be remembered that after the intense heat, Crete is very dry. Almost 300 firefighters fought the element on site, supported by 85 vehicles, 4 helicopters and 4 firefighting planes.
Due to the high dynamics of the situation and the serious threat, a decision was made to evacuate the inhabitants of the villages of Agia Paraskevi, Platanos, Apodoulou, Vathiako, Lochria, Adrachtos, Rizikas, Satta and Chordaki.
According to the fire department, there is currently no large fire front and no settlement is in danger. However, the services are still on site and are constantly monitoring the area of extinguished fires to reduce the risk of re-ignition, as small scattered clusters of fire continue to appear
The destruction caused by the fire is enormous, dozens of square kilometers have been burned, most of which are olive groves and agricultural areas as well as some buildings. Unfortunately, farm animals living in stables and other farm buildings have also been damaged. A state of emergency has been declared in the municipalities of Agia Paraskevi, Agios Ioannis, Ano Merus and Apodoulos due to the extreme intensity of the fire and the extensive damage it has caused.
Today, residents have returned to the evacuated villages, trying to organize their lives on new principles. Electricity has been restored almost throughout the entire area, and efforts are being made to restore water supply to all locations as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the threat of fires in Crete is not abating. Tomorrow, a level 4 fire threat and a red code have been declared for the entire island.
