Halfway through the holidays - first summaries

The halfway point of the holidays is already behind us, so it's time for the first summaries of the season. There are a lot of tourists in Crete, hotels in the most popular destinations record record high occupancy rates of 85-90%, but only their owners and the companies they belong to are probably fully satisfied with the season.

The small and large catering sector and the seasonal holiday trade no longer share the enthusiasm of colleagues from the hotel industry. They notice a change in tourists' habits, which causes the average tourist to limit their spending on-site. This can be seen, among other things, in the fact that the average foreign guest leaves less and less money in taverns, restaurants or shops with souvenirs and local products. Noticeably fewer tourists go to taverns and restaurants in the area where they have a hotel or apartment. Some people are customers who chose the all-inclusive option, so all meals are provided within the hotel. Interestingly, however, the group of tourists who rent a studio apartment and prepare their own meals during their vacation is also growing. As tavern owners emphasize, supermarkets are full of tourists this season.

A new group of disappointed people

This year, the owners of car and bicycle rental companies also joined the group of disappointed people. Menelaos Marakis, president of the Federation of Rental Owners, confirms that an increasing number of tourists are now giving up renting cars or other vehicles. Instead of exploring the island, guests choose to stay at the hotel, hike or take public transportation.

This should not be surprising because, unfortunately, after the pandemic, renting even the smallest car has become dramatically more expensive. In our opinion, the stagnation in this industry was caused by excessive price increases. Marakis estimates that at the moment the percentage of the rented car fleet is between 60 and 75%, which does not bring the expected income.

Bank of Greece confirms the trend

The Bank of Greece also notes lower expenses incurred by tourists on holiday in its summaries. While the latest data confirms a boom in arrivals, average consumer spending has started to decline, which is a big cause for concern. The money that tourists spend in local shops, taverns and other service outlets goes directly to the local economy. A smaller wallet for on-site spending has begun to be seen not only in the case of all-inclusive tourists, but also in the case of individual customers.

Even though, according to data from the Bank of Greece, tourists still do not save when choosing hotels, because the average expenditure on accommodation increased by 9%, the length of stay on holiday has decreased by as much as 11%. In recent months, the average length of stay in Greece has been 12 days.

Who spends the most?

The highest average expenses are incurred by tourists from Australia (>EUR 1,500), slightly smaller ones by tourists from the USA (EUR 977) and from France (EUR 778). For comparison, the average expenditure of a tourist from Poland is EUR 492. As a consolation, we will add that Poland is the country from which 20% more tourists came in 2022-2023, which gives us second place.

Knossos is on top as always

Finally, an interesting fact about the most famous Minoan palace in Knossos. This year is even better than last year in terms of the number of visits. Only in July this year, the palace was visited by 41,078 people, which is higher compared to last year. Probably as early as August, the total number of visitors to Knossos this year will exceed 200,000. Nevertheless, this is also where the tightening of the tourist budget allocated to consumer spending is visible. Guests buy much fewer souvenirs in local shops.

A ja tam zawsze gdzie jadę to szukam wypożyczalni rowerów.

Robię ją z bakłażanem, mieloną wołowiną, ziemniakami i kremowym beszamelem. (...)
