Welcome everyone after our holiday reset from everyday life.
We have written many times on our website about Caretta caretta turtles, which have their breeding areas, among others, in Crete. Every year, at the turn of May and June, local media provide information about new nests appearing on selected sites. This time, however, Caretta caretta appeared in the local media with less positive information. Two weeks ago, on a popular beach in Marathi, a woman swimming near the shore was attacked by a large turtle. Not only did the woman injure her legs when she fell on the rocks, but she also suffered additional injuries when the animal bit her twice.
Today, the Archelon organization, which in Crete deals with the protection and care of this species of turtles, issued a statement about that event. Local authorities of the Chania region and concerned private individuals turned to Archeolon. As it turns out, this case was not an isolated one and such incidents have already occurred in Marathi and other beaches in Greece this year.
Dimitris Phytilis, head of the Archelon Sea Turtle Rescue Center, reminds that sea turtles are not pets. They live freely in the sea, where they usually cover long distances and rarely encounter people. However, in areas where the turtle associates human presence with food, its behavior may change. When these animals are fed by humans, they begin to treat bathers and other turtles as competitors in their feeding grounds. Due to this natural behavior, it tries to drive away such intruders with bites.
Cases of turtle attacks on bathers are very isolated. In the few cases where such unpleasant events occur, there is one common denominator: systematic feeding of turtles. According to reports, this is the case in Marathi, where remains of marine organisms and food waste are systematically thrown into the sea. This action, apart from the fact that under the law it is polluting the sea, which is punishable, also causes turtles to register this area as a feeding ground to which they systematically return.
Giorgos Vramba, also working for Archelon, says the only way to stop the attacks is to stop feeding sea turtles not only in Marathi, but also in all of Crete.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely to stop such behavior immediately, because changing habits requires systematic education and time. The only thing that can be advised to people bathing in Cretan waters is to keep their distance and not approach turtles, both on land and in the water.
