There is still over a month left until the start of summer, but in Crete the temperatures recorded on the weekend just ended were more like those we experience during the summer months.
All this is due to the hot air that flowed over all of Greece. On Saturday, 47 weather stations indicated temperatures above 30 degrees, while on Sunday such values were recorded by as many as 108 stations located in various parts of the country. However, the highest readings were shown by thermometers in Crete. As much as 38.6 degrees was recorded today in the Moni Toplou monastery in northeast Crete. Unfortunately, the overall situation is also made worse by African dust, which, according to forecasts, is expected to hover over Crete until next Wednesday. Only on that day the wind will change direction to the north-west, which will significantly clear the air.
Unfortunately, the constantly recorded increase in temperatures combined with reduced rainfall are the main reasons for scientists' concerns about the availability of water resources. These concerns particularly concern areas that receive large numbers of foreign guests during the tourist season. During these periods, there is a significant increase in demand for drinking water. Based on the research and measurements carried out in Greece, an average decrease in rainfall of 15-20% was observed. Unfortunately, as rainfall declines, so does the need for water as the number of people visiting the country continues to increase.
Currently, rainfall in Greece has two peaks. One maximum occurs in late November and December, and the other maximum occurs in late May and early June. The extent of water shortages will be assessed based on the amount of rainfall in the period until June 15. If the expected rainfall does not occur during this period, which is the second maximum rainfall in the country, the problem of drought will become very significant in the areas of the South Aegean, Crete, the South Peloponnese and large cities in Greece.
