Last Monday, the list of beaches distinguished by the famous symbol: the Blue Flag was once again announced. The undisputed winner is again Spain. Greece, as in previous years, took second place on the international list. In total, 581 beaches, 15 marinas and 6 tourist ships were awarded there. Thus, Greece is responsible for 14% of the awards this year. It is also worth noting that Greece improved its last year's result, because in 2021 "only" 545 Greek sites were awarded.
47 countries took part in this year's edition of the program. In total, 4,194 beaches located around the world were awarded, 732 marinas and 116 cruise boats. \
As for the regional units of Greece, the best result was taken by Halkidiki (87 awards), followed by Rhodes (55). Crete counted as an island has won a total of 128 awards, but the results are given for individual regions. Interestingly, at the other end of the list, i.e. regions with the lowest number of distinctions, there are such prefectures as Andros, Mykonos, Itaka and Tinos.
So how did Crete fare this year?
In the Lassithi region, you will see the blue flag in 41 places this year, which is a better result than last year, when 40 beaches were awarded. In the Chania region this year, 36 beaches have been distinguished, which is three more than in 2021. The Heraklion region also recorded a higher score. This year, the distinctive flag will appear on 31 beaches (compared to 29 a year ago). Rethymno has the fewest distinctions (20). However, in this prefecture it is also a slightly better result than a year ago (18).
A detailed list of Cretan beaches awarded with the Blue Flag can be found at the end of this article.
The 35th anniversary of the Blue Flag program
Awards have been granted since 1987 to those beaches and marinas that meet stringent requirements and criteria. Over the last several years, the Blue Flag has become the most recognizable and popular international symbol of high-quality beaches and marinas in the world. A uniform standard for this award was developed in 2001 by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in Denmark. In Greece, the Blue Flag is awarded by the Greek Society for Nature Conservation (EEPF), which coordinates this program.
Flags from bottles
Interestingly, since 2021, the characteristic blue flags are produced from 100% used PET bottles. They are collected in supermarkets and other collection points in Western Europe. The bottles are chopped into small flakes, which are then melted into polyester yarn, from which the fabric used in the final production of flags is made.
The birth of an idea
The history of this award dates back to 1985, when the idea of distinguishing coastal municipalities characterized by high water quality was born in France. Two years later, in 1987, this idea took off as an official European program known as the Blue Flag. Initially, the awards were to be an incentive for bathing water managers to comply with the provisions of the European Council directive on the reduction of pollution of bathing water and its protection against further pollution (Council Directive 76/160 / EEC of 8 December 1975). Over the next several years, the simple and clear concept of marking the best beaches and marinas was also positively received by tourists in the European Union. Work has commenced on changes to the rules allowing for the introduction of this distinction in other countries around the world. Since 2001, after establishing uniform rules, this mark has become an international symbol of the best beaches.
What criteria must the beach meet to receive the Blue Flag award?
Applicant beaches must meet the 33 criteria imposed by FEE (38 for marinas, 51 for pleasure boats). The prerequisite for this award is excellent water quality. No other quality grading, not even "good", is acceptable. Below we present the most important criteria that are taken into account. They are divided into four issues within which detailed conditions are specified.
Clean sea and coast
excellent bathing water quality confirmed by sample tests
a sufficient number of waste and recycling bins that need to be emptied regularly
continuous, regular cleaning of the coast from garbage, cigarette butts, etc.
Coastal organization
posting the official results of microbiological analyzes on the mandatory notice board
a ban on the movement of vehicles and mopeds on the coast
camping ban
efficient and clean sanitary facilities
Guest safety
the presence of trained, certified rescuers or direct access to an emergency telephone, emergency equipment and first aid
accessibility and provision of services for people with disabilities (IDP)
Nature protection and taking care of the natural environment
protection of the coastal zone, in particular protected areas, including flora and fauna
implementing specific educational activities in the field of environmental protection for visitors to the Blue Flags coastal zone
Robię ją z bakłażanem, mieloną wołowiną, ziemniakami i kremowym beszamelem. (...)
