Today, good news for those planning to spend their holidays this year in the south of Crete in the Plakias region in the Rethymno prefecture. A few days ago, the road leading through Kotsifou was opened. This road remained closed for over a year, after a massive landslide on March 13, 2024, which completely destroyed it. After preliminary assessments and studies of the condition of the slopes, a plan was developed to secure the walls of the gorge. In recent months, work has been carried out to secure the slopes, remove loose rocks and repair the road. Although minor finishing works are still being carried out here, they do not impede car traffic.

The opening of the Kotsifou Gorge was awaited primarily by local residents, for whom the closure of this road was a major obstacle to travel to the northern coast of Crete, as it meant having to take a longer route through the Kourtaliotiko Gorge.
Also for tourists who come to the area of Plakias and its surroundings in the summer, the closure of the passage through Kotsifou was a significant inconvenience and the need to take a longer detour.
Unfortunately, last Sunday afternoon, an accident occurred on the road in the Kotsifou gorge. A 50-year-old driver driving from Plakias to Rethymno, for an unexplained reason, drove into the opposite lane, as a result of which the car overturned and then came to rest on the slope of the gorge. The driver was initially taken to the hospital in Rethymno, but due to the seriousness of his condition, he was transported to the hospital in Chania.
